Coalitions

Putnam Communities That Care (CTC) Coalition

The mission of the Putnam Communities That Care (CTC) Coalition is to build a safe and healthy family-oriented community, which includes reducing the use of harmful substances by our adolescents. Our coalition includes individuals from all sectors of the community who work together to reduce risk factors and strengthen protective factors through education, enforcement and policy initiatives.

Putnam CTC coalition is a county-wide organization with sub coalitions in all parts of the County.  We currently have coalitions in 5 communities in Putnam in addition to the County CTC. Those communities are Carmel, Mahopac, Putnam Valley, Philipstown and Brewster. Our focus is on the risk taking behaviors of the County’s young people. Our goal is to provide the community at large with information, resources and initiatives to deal with those issues. We do compliance checks with local law enforcement, provide MedReturn boxes throughout the County, hold Pre-Prom presentations for parents , conduct  SIDNE (Simulated Impaired Driving Experience) for teens and assisted in the drafting of the social host liability law in all towns and villages in the County. As a result of our efforts we have seen a significant decrease in 30 day alcohol use and binge drinking as well as a reduction in marijuana use but we still have a long way to go.  What makes us unique is our ability to tackle County wide problems while at the same time addressing the particular needs of each community we serve.

Partnership for Success Project

In 2014 the Putnam Communities That Care Coalition was awarded a Partnership for Success Grant. The Partnership for Success (PFS) Grant is a sub grantee of the NYS Strategic Prevention Framework Grant. The goal of this project is to reduce the rates of prescription drug abuse and heroin use among the 12 – 25 year old population in NY through the use of evidence-based, environmental prevention strategies and the five steps of the Strategic Prevention Framework. The strategic prevention framework is a five-element model intended to aid community coalitions in developing an infrastructure which can act to effectively reduce alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use through primarily evidence-based, environmental strategies.
